What is sweat fabric?
Sweat fabric, also known as jogging fabric, is a knitted fabric just like jersey, but thicker and heavier. Sweat fabric is produced in a similar way to French Terry, but the reverse side is brushed. As a result, the fabric feels soft and retains heat well. Sweat fabric is widely used for hoodies, jogging suits, sweaters and warm casual clothing.

Choosing & comparing fabrics
What is the difference between jersey and French Terry?
Jersey is usually thinner, more supple and lighter than French Terry. Jersey is often used for T-shirts, dresses and baby clothing. French Terry is usually heavier and firmer and is widely used for sweaters, cardigans, hoodies and jogging clothing.
What is the difference between French Terry and sweat fabric?
French Terry has loops on the inside and is usually unbrushed. Sweat fabric is produced in a similar way, but the reverse side is brushed. This makes sweat fabric softer and warmer. French Terry is suitable for lighter sweaters and cardigans, while sweat fabric is popular for hoodies, jogging suits and warm casual clothing.
What is the difference between jersey and rib jersey?
Jersey is a smooth, supple knitted fabric. Rib jersey is also knitted, but has a clear rib structure and often more stretch. Jersey is widely used for T-shirts and dresses, while rib jersey is popular for fitted clothing, tops, baby clothing, cuffs and comfortable basics.
What is the difference between muslin and waffle fabric?
Muslin or double gauze is soft, airy and highly absorbent. Waffle fabric has a recognisable woven waffle structure. Muslin is widely used for muslin cloths, baby clothing and airy garments. Waffle fabric is often used for baby items, bath textiles, accessories and products where structure is important.
What is the difference between woven and knitted fabrics?
Woven fabrics are made by interlacing threads crosswise. As a result, they are often more shape-retaining and less stretchy. Knitted fabrics, such as jersey, rib jersey, French Terry and sweat fabric, are made with loops. This usually makes them more stretchy and comfortable for clothing that needs to move with the body.
What is the difference between linen and viscose?
Linen is a natural fabric made from flax fibres. It is airy, strong and has a natural appearance. Viscose is made from natural raw materials, but is a man-made fibre. Viscose drapes smoothly and feels soft. Linen is popular for airy clothing and tablecloths, while viscose is often used for flowing dresses, blouses and tops.
What is the difference between poplin and cotton?
Cotton is a fibre, while poplin is a weaving method. Poplin can be made from cotton and is more finely woven than many standard cotton fabrics. This makes poplin feel smoother and lighter. Poplin is widely used for shirts, blouses, dresses and bedding.
Which fabric is suitable for baby clothing?
For baby clothing, soft, comfortable and skin-friendly fabrics are often used, such as jersey, rib jersey, muslin, soft sweat fabrics, French Terry, terry cloth and minky fleece. For baby textiles, also pay attention to certifications such as Oeko-Tex product class 1 when this is important for your application.
Which fabric is suitable for children’s clothing?
For children’s clothing, comfortable, strong and easy-to-wear fabrics are important. Jersey, French Terry, sweat fabric, rib jersey, muslin, waffle fabric and corduroy are widely used for children’s clothing because they are comfortable to wear and suitable for everyday use.
Which fabric is suitable for T-shirts?
Jersey is the most commonly used fabric for T-shirts. Thanks to its stretch and wearing comfort, jersey is ideal for basic T-shirts, children’s clothing and casual fashion. Single jersey is suitable for lighter T-shirts, while rib jersey offers more structure and extra stretch.
Which fabric is suitable for sweaters?
French Terry, sweat fabric and jogging fabric are often used for sweaters. French Terry is comfortable and slightly lighter, while sweat fabric is warmer due to its brushed inside. These fabrics offer comfort, firmness and enough structure for jumpers, cardigans, hoodies and jogging bottoms.
Which fabric is suitable for hoodies?
Sweat fabrics, French Terry and Alpen Sweat are usually used for hoodies. Sweat fabric is warmer because of its brushed inside, French Terry feels slightly lighter and Alpen Sweat has an extra fleece layer on the inside. This makes Alpen Sweat highly suitable for warm winter clothing.
Which fabric is suitable for dresses?
Viscose, viscose jersey, linen, poplin, cotton lawn, muslin and Punta di Milano are often used for dresses. Viscose and viscose jersey drape smoothly, linen feels airy, poplin provides more structure and Punta di Milano is suitable for smart, shape-retaining dresses.
